Soy: It’s one of those foods that so many people think is good for them. It’s low in calories, it’s versatile, and it’s packed with tons of things that are good for you, including:

In addition to all of the things that soy contains that are good for you, it also contains something that many people fear is devastating to your health: Isoflavones.

So, what makes isoflavones bad for you? Well, they are similar to estrogen, and as such, many people think that it can increase the risk of certain types of cancers. Why? -- Because estrogen is directly linked to cancers that are sensitive to hormones, like breast cancer.

Soy: It May Not Be So Bad For You

However, despite what many people fear about soy and increased cancer risks, it may actually not be as bad as is thought. That’s because there are some studies that have actually shown that people who eat soy are less likely to get breast cancer.

In fact, it’s thought that soy could actually lower the risk of getting several other types of cancer. Since soybeans and its derivatives, including soy nuts and edamame, contain fiber, and a diet that is high in fiber may help to lower your risks for getting several types of cancer, including colorectal cancer.

Consider the fact that studies have been conducted on prostate cancer survivors that show that eating soy-based foods can lower PSA levels.

So, given these implications, no suggestions have been made to indicate that you should stop eating soy. If you are going to add it to your diet, make sure that it is well balanced. Eat a diet that contains a variety of foods, including soy. A diet that is rich in vegetables, fruits, lean meats and soy is the best way to go.
