The Amish Sweet Bread is definitely a must-try.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups water
  • 2/3 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 tbsp active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 5 1/2 to 6 cups all purpose flour

You will also need:

  • two large bowls
  • dough cutter
  • 2 bread loaf pans

First, measure 2 cups of 110℉ water. If you can’t measure the temperature of your water, bring half a cup of water to a boil and add 2 cups of room temperature water to it. That’s it.

Add sugar to your water, and stir until dissolved. Stir in the dry yeast, and let it rest for 10 minutes. You can store the yeast in an airtight container in the fridge and use it within 4 months. If you keep it in the freezer, you can use it within 6 months.

Let’s move on with the recipe. Add a cup of flour to the yeast, and stir gently. Add another cup and mix again. You need to make a non-sticky dough. How much flour should you use? Go by the feel. You may not use all the flower we’ve listed in the ingredients.

Knead your dough for five minutes. Add more flour if it becomes sticky. How to know if your dough is worked enough? You should pinch and pull part of it without tearing it.

Add oil to a bowl, and put the dough in it. Cover your dough with damp towel, and let it rest for an hour. Once it doubles in size, take the dough out and cut it in half. Transfer the dough into loaf pans. Form it well.

Leave the loaves uncovered for half an hour. It will rise again.

Transfer the loaves into a 350℉ and bake for half an hour.

Enjoy your Amish Sweet Bread!
