How To Make Fruit and Vegetable Bug Snacks

It’s time to get creative! Do you know how to make cute bugs? We will give you a few tips and tricks. Our “bugs” are gluten-free, vegan and low in sodium.

Veggie bugs

You will need:

  • 2-3 celery stalks, cut into different sizes
  • 1-2 mini cucumbers (cut in half lengthwise, and scoop out the seeds; cut them in different sizes)
  •  ½ cup Vegan cream cheese
  • 10 cucumber slices
  • 1 cup cherry and/or grape tomatoes (different colours)
  • 1 bunch chives, cut into 1” pieces
  • 5-7 black olives
  • 10 cashews

Fruit bugs

You will need:

  • 2-3 Celery stalks, cut into different sizes

  • ½ cup Vegan cream cheese
  • 10 cucumber slices
  • 1 cup cherry and/or grape tomatoes (various colours)
  • 1 bunch chives, cut into 1” pieces
  • 5-7 black olives
  • 10 cashews

Instructions:

1. Get your googly eyes ready

Veggie bugs: Cut the pupils using a straw and black olives. You can just cut the olives in small pieces. Put small dots of your cheese on a plate, and put the “pupils” on top. Chill the “eyes.”

Fruit bugs: Repeat the dots, and use mini dairy-free chocolate chips. You can also use peanut butter or cream cheese to stick the mini chocolate chips to the cereal. Chill in the freezer.

Extra tip: Use sandwich bags if you don’t have piping bags.

2. Prepare your fruits and veggies.

3. Scoop the seeds from your cucumbers. Slice a flat edge on the bottom of your cucumbers and celery.

4. Veggie bugs: fill the stalks and cucumbers with cream cheese.

5. Fruit bugs: fill the celery stalks with peanut butter.

6. Create snails, caterpillars, dragonflies and butterflies!

Snails: Make the shell using a fruit or veggie round. Stick the googly eyes on tomato, cashew, or grape heads. Use chives or apple slices to make the antennae.

Caterpillars: Put googly eyes on cherry tomato or grape heads. Putt he antennae. Create the body with a line of cherry tomato, grape, blueberries or cereal.

Dragonflies and butterflies: Put the eyes on the head. You can use cereal eyes on peanut butter. Put the antennae, and use sliced strawberries and cucumber slices to make the wings. Make the body using cereal, blueberries, grapes, and cherry tomatoes.
