Gout, an uncomfortable and painful disorder, manifests all over the body, particularly affecting the joints, ankles, knees, and elbows. The condition typically occurs due to an increased deposit of sodium urate crystals, thus increasing the uric acid levels.
While it can happen in any of the aforementioned areas, gout mostly manifests in the big toe, and sometimes in the spine, shoulders, and hips.

If the uric acid is not expelled from the body, it can lead to crystal formation under the skin, around certain body organs, and around the joints. Another cause of gout can also be an elevated alcohol consumption.
How to Adjust Your Diet to Beat Gout?
To treat gout, there are a few dos and don’ts as far as nutrition is considered. Patients suffering from gout should at all cost avoid alcohol, refined foods, sugary beverages and snacks, dairy, fried foods, soft drinks, and tobacco.
As protein is not recommended when treating gout, you should avoid foods like asparagus, meats, mushrooms, and anchovies. In addition, when dealing with gout, it’s best to steer clear of soy milk, beans, and bean sprouts.
Aside from nutrition, if you want to beat gout you should also exercise regularly, or at least 3 times a week for at least half an hour.
Hydration plays a great role in dealing with gout, so it’s best you drink from 8-10 glasses of water daily. Losing weight is also recommended in the fight against gout, as obesity can worsen the condition.
Finally, although fruits and veggies are a great way to control gout symptoms, there are some you should avoid. Such include durian, strawberries, tomato, cauliflower, peas, asparagus, spinach, and rhubarb.
Recommended Foods to Fight Gout Symptoms
Just like the don’ts, there are many foods which can suppress the occurrence of gout, too. Such include green juices, cabbage, and celery, all of which can reduce inflammation and prevent crystallization.
Other beneficial products to try include cucumbers and beets, which help cleanse the kidneys, and detoxify the liver. As for fruits, you can always turn to pineapple and papaya, which offer lots of hydration and suppress the development of gout.
Below are several recommended one-portion combinations to help you fight gout more effectively. For the best results, combine:
- 2 carrots, 1 cucumber, and 8 ribs of celery.
- 2 green apples, 1 cucumber, 1 fennel, 6 leaves of kale, ¼ lemon slice, a piece of ginger.
- 2 green apples (chayote is an alternative), 6 ribs of celery, ¼ cabbage, a piece of ginger.
- 2 carrots, ½ celeriac, 1 fennel, 1 cucumber, ¼ lemon.
- 1 green apple, 1 cucumber, 1 small bitter gourd, ¼ lemon slice.
- 1 cucumber, 1 medium-sized beetroot, ¼ lemon, a piece of ginger.
- 6 ribs of celery, ½ pineapple, ¼ lemon, a piece of ginger.
- 1 shot of wheatgrass juice and a squeeze of lemon
On top of these, drink up coconut water as much as possible and eat cherries (up to 50 a day).
When to see a doctor?
Of course, if nothing works, it is best you make a doctor’s appointment. Seek medical help when:
- You experience gout for the first time. Gout has similar symptoms as joint inflammation and infection, and a doctor can set up a proper diagnosis.
- When you have a consistent fever and chills. If the fever is followed by a higher temperature, this can also mean a greater infection.
- If your symptoms don’t go away in 48 hours to a week after treatment. Most commonly, gout symptoms disappear in 7-10 days.
