Cinnamon is a prized spice for its smell and aroma, but you should know that cinnamon has many healing effects on our body too. Cinnamon has strong antibacterial and antifungal operation, and offers many benefits to the human body.
Cinnamon (Cinnamomum Laurus) is obtained from the bark of the evergreen tree that in the exotic areas, on average, grows up to 20 and 30 meters. People grow it for ages, and its therapeutic properties were known to many ancient civilizations.
The essential oils in its bark have three important medicinal active components: cinnamaldehyde, cinnamyl acetate, and cinnamyl alcohol. In addition to the cinnamon affects against blood coagulation, it also has antimicrobial effect and stabilizing effect on blood sugar levels.
Cinnamon is good against clots
The coagulation of blood platelets is a normal process that prevents bleeding, but the problem occurs when platelets accumulate excessively. Cinnamaldehyde from cinnamon prevents coagulation by limiting the supply of fatty acids from platelet membrane, called arachidonic acid, which cause inflammation.
Moreover, cinnamon has the ability in reducing inflammatory processes.
Against microorganisms -- a natural preservative
The antimicrobial activity of cinnamon is also strong. It can prevent the formation of bacteria, yeast and fungi. Some tests have shown that in many cases, cinnamon was more effective in stopping the spread of yeast than the drug fluconazole.
Based on the research, which was published in August 2003 in the International Journal of Food Microbiology, many reasons were given for cinnamon to be used as a legitimate alternative preservative in food. Research has shown that only a few drops of essential oil of cinnamon to three grams of carrot soup disable the development of pathogenic Bacillus cereus for at least 60 days.
Cinnamon stabilizes blood sugar
The ability of cinnamon to normalize blood sugar levels can help people with type 2 diabetes for it makes a positive response to insulin. Just half a teaspoon of cinnamon a day, in average lowers blood sugar by 20 percent. In case of discontinuation of the regular consumption of cinnamon, the blood sugar level immediately rises.
