The coronavirus has paralyzed the entire world, and for some people, it’s hard to understand the crisis. Peter Vanham shared the letter his father sent him to explain the situation and future outlook of COVID-19 in Europe, China and the rest of the world.
His dad retired as Head of Virology at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp.
My dad, who retired last year as Head of Virology at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, shared an interesting note with me and my siblings, to explain to us the situation and future outlook of the coronavirus in Europe, China and around the world. Here’s what he said:

The first thing Peter’s dad did was mention that we’ll remain in the rising part of the curve of detected cases, because “the containment measures” that were announced these days need time to have an effect. Coronavirus has an incubation period of around two weeks. The number of detected cases will drop after that period.
The situation is rather serious. But, everything will turn well at the end. China had 11 new cases on March 14 as opposed to 14,000 at its highest peak.
Only 56 Chinese per million got infected since the outbreak went on. The virologist explained that they couldn’t determine the role of children, youngsters and healthy individuals in the spread of COVID-19. But, they do know that asymptomatic patients play an important role in spreading the symptom. Young kids need to be separated from the elderly.
Death rates are pretty high for older people and individuals with diagnose. Individuals diagnosed with heart disease, diabetes, cancer and other conditions have a higher risk. The same applies to those over 70. You may be carrying the virus without any symptoms. But, other people may die from it.
Experts are expected to develop a vaccine against the coronavirus within a year. Sadly, COVID-19 may mutate and become more virulent. It may also become resistant to human anti-bodies. It can use these anti-bodies to enter your cells. Remember what happened with the Dengue, right?
Experts can also develop an effective medicine for the treatment of coronavirus. This remedy can help those who have shown no symptoms. This applies to people who have been in contact with an infected person.
This will help them avoid getting sick. COVID-19 is an acute infection, and the remedy can help you at the very first moment you got infected. Of course, this remedy is only effective in those who haven’t developed symptoms.
The virologist advised his children to postpone any visit in the next period. There are a lot of asymptomatic cases, and they better be safe than sorry.
Social distance is important at this point, and meeting people when they are sick is not acceptable during a pandemic. The virologist advised his children to avoid traveling by plane or using rental cars or buses/trains. Limit your traveling.
Wash your hands and don’t touch your face. Be careful when touching door knobs, railings and public areas. Avoid closed spaces, bars and restaurants.
Walks in nature are fine as long as you keep a distance from others.
